Day 04

Wind finally stopped late in the night/early in the morning. Pretty nice day, a little cool. Found pithouse/open air site just on north side of the mouth of #5.5. Lots of pottery, lots of chippings. Went up #6 to Double-Stack Ruin, which is a pretty nice ruin. Upper part is only accessible by a scary traverse, so I just looked at the bottom part. One huge free-standing wall, 2 smashed up kivas, one still with roof post resting on pilasters. Couple of other structures, a few steps, metate grooves, rock art. Just above it is a Bastermaker Cave: long cave, metate grooves on 1 rock at end is all I found. Just above that cave is another cave, south facing; a lot of this cave has been scoured clean by flash floods, still a few questionable cysts, one row of pecked depression on wall, and a single white matchstick man pictograph. When I returned to my pack, I found a hogan that I must have missed a number of times before. Fairly old, partially covered by sand, pretty good shape. Went up #7, found Crude Shelter, but couldn't find Cave w/Rock Art. Just above the mouth of #7 (to the north) found a large Cowboy Corral. had to make up time so I passed #8, 9, and 10 and went to south rim of #11. Tomorrow I will backtrack and check 9 and 10. Found good campsite, has easy access to plentiful water. Chilly night, but not like last night. Short evening - got to camp, pumped water, set up tent, ate, and to bed. Lots of owls around.
