Day 13
Another cold night became a very warm morning. Got up an ate, then hiked up Kickass Canyon. Saw and videoed most of the sites I knew about (except 2 of the super crappy ones), and found a small cave above the Ballroom, not much in it except 1 metate groove. Very difficult to get to. Read the ammo can book at the Ballroom. It says that it is a Pueblo 2-3 site, not a Basketmaker cave. The large room in the block is a square kiva. At Cave E the ladder is gone; a couple of logs are propped up an I climb up those (pretty hard). I don't dare climb down them, so I go down the ledges to the side - not too bad, but had to jump the last bit. After I stop by camp, then head up the main fork of Butler Wash, the weather gets less pleasant. Cloudy/overcast, wind and cool. I mark two large Pueblo 1 sites, one by my camp and one farther up near the head of the entrenchment (lots of scatter between the two). Gets dry and sandy, and with weather being crappy, I head back to camp. Come back and get water. Weather is hot and sunny again, then overcast and cloudy again. Lay in tent and read and work on maps. Still a little cloud at dinnertime, but calm - just like most previous nights. When I go out at 7 to wash dishes, some coyotes start howling and barking close by, but I yell and don't hear from them again.
