Day 02
Day 2 - Dayhiked over little ridges (pottery and worked stone everywhere) to a road (10 minutes), cross country to the north fork of Whiskers Draw, then followed it up. Ruin under a tiny ledge, "chimney" only thing interesting about it. Lot of pottery sites along north fork as I go up it. Crossed road where it crosses the north fork; just after on north side of stream, found huge amounts of pottery along about 200 feet of hillside. Further up, along slickrock ledge above very entrenched canyon bottom, spot 2 caves. As I make my way down steep slickrock, find about 15 Moqi steps just where I need them to be. Cave A (further up the side canyon) has some standing walls, some petroglyphs, lots of steps and handholds, lots of pottery. Cave B is more destroyed, only bits of walls, a lot of corn, more rock art, some of which is possibly Ute (black pigments, cowboy figure?). Lots of pottery, both in the cave and on the flat in front of it. Head back to camp. Back at road+north fork, go wrong way and road takes me up. End up too high, so go down a long ridge to road + south fork. Pottery all along ridge. Regain road right where I left it that morning and head back to camp. In cottonwoods and sagebrush on bottom between the two forks, spot old green house hidden in the trees. Very creepy. Fairly warm day. No jacket entire time away from camp (10 to 4). Warmer that night, owl still loud by tent.
