Day 04
Day 4 - Up at 6:30, already hot. Leave camp at 9, see Tyler at the mouth of Pasture. Chat a minute. Go just up Pasture and climb up and out on the south side of the canyon, going across the meander and down to the river (saving myself 2 river crossings). Cross the river, fairly easy. Hit well-used trail, goes around next meander, then along benches to a giant alcove opposite the mouth of Robbers Roost Canyon. Hang food stash - 10 days of food and my big fuel bottle, probably at least 20 lbs. Cross the river with a much lightened pack, go upcanyon to .5 miles before the south fork. One little mossy water hole under a boulder is all I find. Camp in open under a cottonwood. Walk clear back to river looking for petroglyphs - 2 boulders right inside the canyon, one so faded and re-patinaed that you can't make out any detail, the other is a very good figure, a man (2' or so) with arms raised in warning. Hang out at camp, pump water, read. A little rain today, once at food stash, once, fairly hard, just as I arrived at campsite. Saw 1 hawk by river, numerous hummingbirds, butterflies. So hot.
