Day 01

Day 1 - Shane and Kathy leave about 9, start hiking about 9:30. Really fun trail across slickrock ridges and through canyon bottoms. One hard part when leaving Big Spring Canyon - a 15' wall with Moqi steps, covered in snow and ice. Somehow crawl up it. Eat lunch on a bench above Elephant Canyon, then drop in. On way down, last part is completely covered in snow and ice. Make it to the last step before falling on my butt, gash my arm pretty good and covered in snow. Get down into canyon and walk upcanyon a bit to find my site, EC2 (assigned campsites in this area). Its a ways above the canyon floor, so I have to climb up a snowy, muddy hill to get to it, but its all slickrock, so at least its a dry camp. Walk upcanyon a bit further and find some water. Pump water, set up tent, dinner, early to bed. Cold night.
